Border plan
Southbound is easy. Northbound is the trip.
How to cross on a holiday weekend without losing Monday in a line.
The direction that matters
Getting into Mexico is usually quick. Coming back into the United States is where holiday weekends get long. One 2026 guide puts standard-lane northbound waits at anywhere from under 10 minutes on a quiet Tuesday morning to over three hours on a holiday Sunday evening. Plan the return before you plan the beach.
San Ysidro or Otay Mesa
There are two main crossings. A 2026 comparison of March and April data found Otay Mesa slightly faster for standard vehicle lanes (about 79 minutes against 88), while San Ysidro was faster for SENTRI (about 16 minutes against 24). Another guide suggests Otay Mesa standard waits run 30 to 60 minutes shorter on many Fridays and Sundays. Otay Mesa is farther from Rosarito, so the trade-off depends on your route, and the best answer on the day is whichever CBP shows as shorter.
Lanes that save time
- SENTRI requires enrollment in advance, so it is not a last-minute fix.
- Ready Lane is for travelers with an eligible, RFID-enabled document, and typically moves faster than the general lane.
- Check CBP for the current eligibility rules before relying on either.
Timing the return
- Return traffic builds on the last day of a long weekend. One guide recommends crossing before noon or late at night on holiday Sundays, avoiding the window in between. Treat it as a pattern, not a promise.
- If you can, stay the extra night and cross on a lighter day.
- Keep the 3:00 p.m. Moment of Remembrance in mind: it is a good reason to be settled somewhere rather than in a line.
What to carry
- A valid passport book or passport card for each traveler, to re-enter the United States.
- Mexican auto insurance if you are driving. US policies generally do not cover you in Mexico, and the coverage is easy to buy online before you cross.
- A full tank, water and a charged phone for the return trip.
- If you plan to travel beyond a short visit, check Mexico's current entry requirements for your nationality.
